About Neurodiverse Nurse

Founded by Donna Carter – specialist ADHD nurse, independent prescriber, and someone who truly understands.

At Neurodiverse Nurse, we specialise in compassionate, timely and professional ADHD assessment for adults. Founded by Donna Carter, a registered mental health nurse with over 15 years of experience working in diverse NHS mental health services, this practice was created to offer the kind of support Donna herself once needed: expert care, grounded in lived experience.

Whether you’re seeking an ADHD diagnosis, looking for post-diagnostic treatment, or trying to make sense of long-standing difficulties with focus, organisation or emotional regulation, Neurodiverse Nurse is here to help. We take a personalised, non-judgemental and evidence-based approach to treating ADHD, with a strong emphasis on building trust and helping you feel heard.

Meet Donna – The Neurodiverse Nurse

“I created Neurodiverse Nurse to offer the support I wish I’d had – professional, relatable, and rooted in understanding.”

Donna Carter is a registered mental health nurse, an independent nurse prescriber, and a clinical nurse specialist in ADHD. She’s also someone who lives with ADHD herself. Having received her diagnosis in her early 30s, Donna brings a rare and valuable perspective to her work – blending clinical expertise with deep personal insight into what it means to be neurodivergent.

Her professional background spans over 15 years in the NHS, where she’s worked across inpatient and community mental health services, including forensic settings, perinatal mental health, and crisis services. In all these areas, Donna saw first-hand the growing need for proper recognition and support for adults with ADHD – especially for those who had slipped through the net of diagnosis earlier in life.

Informed by these experiences, Donna completed the gold standard training in ADHD diagnosis and treatment with King’s College London, one of the UK’s most respected academic institutions in this field. This ensures that every ADHD assessment she delivers is in line with national best practice and grounded in the latest clinical evidence.

Clinical Expertise & Lived Experience

Donna is trained in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy, equipping her to support clients not just through the diagnostic process but also emotionally and practically. She knows that getting an ADHD diagnosis later in life can be a huge shift – and sometimes a difficult one. Her approach to care is built around empathy, psychoeducation, and helping clients create meaningful change in their lives.

Through her own ADHD diagnosis, Donna experienced dramatic improvements in her self-awareness, parenting, and career. It helped her understand past challenges with new clarity and gave her the tools to become more compassionate to herself and more present for her family – including her son, who also has ADHD.

Her lived experience also led her to set up a neurodiversity network within her NHS Trust, where she supports fellow professionals navigating ADHD in the workplace. She also works with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) to champion better support for nurses with ADHD – recognising that neurodivergence exists in every profession, including healthcare itself.

Why Choose Neurodiverse Nurse?

At Neurodiverse Nurse, you’re not just a case file or checklist. Donna understands the emotional weight that can come with seeking a diagnosis as an adult. You may have faced years of misdiagnosis, self-doubt, or systemic barriers – and that’s why her care is designed to be responsive, empowering, and kind.

Every assessment is tailored to the individual, taking into account co-existing conditions, past trauma, and the wider context of your life. And because Donna is an independent nurse prescriber, she can work with you directly on medication plans if appropriate or make onward referrals if another diagnosis feels more suitable.

This is neurodiverse care done differently – with understanding, professionalism, and heart.
